Overcoming addiction is one of the toughest things to do. That is why many people make several attempts before truly succeeding. This should not dishearten you if overcoming addiction is your current personal goal but instead you should focus on the fact that quitting your addiction for good is very possible.
Before you can start addressing your addiction problem, you need to do one very important thing – fully admit to yourself that you do have a problem. Until this happens, change cannot take place. Once you have owned up to your addiction and have grasped the seriousness of your situation, then comes the willingness to give up whatever it is that is consuming you and negatively affecting your life.
As you become open to change, the easier it would be for you to start taking positive action towards overcoming addiction. One of the best ways to do so is to surround yourself with a strong support system, which is ideally comprised of people who are also going through the same challenge that you are. Members of a support group will be able to offer you the understanding and encouragement you need because they know exactly what you are experiencing. Oftentimes, just the knowledge that you are not alone in your struggle is uplifting.
When you join a support group, make sure to attend meetings regularly and not only when you are emotionally down. This will help strengthen you and lessen the moments when you feel like going back to your old habits. For alcoholism, drug addiction or other life-threatening addictions, it is best to get professional help by enrolling in a detoxification or rehabilitation program. It may be necessary for you to stay in a treatment center for the duration of a program.
The support of your family and friends are also very important when you are overcoming addiction. Let your loved ones and friends know what you are trying to do. They may not fully understand your struggle but they share your desire to become a better person so do not distance yourself from them. This can only give you feelings of loneliness, which is one of the main reasons behind most addictions. Nevertheless, if there are people close to you who you know may put you in a situation that may encourage a relapse to your addiction then have the courage to avoid these people or avoid such situations.
Get as much help as you need. Aside from frequent meetings with your support group, it will also help you in overcoming addiction when you have a better understanding of it, including what made you start or what goes on in your brain when you are having urges. Psychology books and addiction books are useful for this purpose. There are also many self-help and inspirational books that can give you further motivation as well as practical and effective methods to overcoming addiction.
Another consideration is going to counseling and therapy sessions, which can greatly help resolve deep-seated emotional turmoil that is behind the self-destructive behavior.
You may feel like it is ridiculous for a complete stranger to evaluate your emotions but a highly-trained and experienced psychologist is the best person to do so because oftentimes we are not conscious of how our emotions are truly affecting us. With the help of a professional, you will be able to learn how to express your emotions in a constructive way.
Replace your addiction with activities that give you satisfaction. These can be exploring hobbies and interests, becoming more physically active, joining an uplifting organization like a volunteer group, or do more traveling. Spiritual renewal is also one of the most powerful ways to overcome addiction. There are many ways to do this such as daily meditation and prayer or attending church regularly.
As you work towards overcoming addiction, there may be times that you will falter. Do not be too harsh on yourself. Just focus on your desire to change and in living your life. Take it a day at a time and the next thing you know, you have made it.
