It is difficult to define happiness. It can range from a simple good feeling to pure and utter bliss that go beyond words. Happiness also means different things to different people. Being successful in a career can make one person happy but for another person, it could be totally different like raising a family. Nevertheless, the so-called pursuit of happiness is universal. There is not a person on earth who does not want to be happy. If your answer to the question “Are you happy?” is a resounding no, you might even be wondering if you can be truly happy at all.

You have to realize that attaining happiness is of course possible and that you deserve it just like everybody else. Many people have become resigned to being sad, thinking that they are destined to live a miserable life. Do not make the mistake of believing this. It cannot be farther from the truth but it will become real if you choose to accept it. Happiness will come to you if you nurture it. Here are some ways towards attaining happiness:

First, ask yourself what happiness means to you. What you do need to do or have to be happy? Only you can answer this question. You simply cannot compare your dreams or desires with those of your friends or peers. Neither can you pattern them against the happiness goals of other people.

When you know what will give you happiness, you can start devising an actionable plan towards it. Oftentimes, the pursuit of whatever it is that will make you happy can be uplifting in itself because it feels great to be in control of your life and to know that you are doing something that has significance to you.

Do you notice how it is very easy to be negative when you are around people who constantly whine about their lives and are always in a gloomy mood? The same is true for the opposite. Spend time with people who are happy. These are the ones who find something to smile about even when times are tough and who can see the good even in bad situations. When you are around such people, you will find it much easier to create a state of happiness in your life.    

One thing you have to realize about happiness is that it does not mean that when you attain it you will never feel sadness again because that is just impossible. Happy people do not live perfect, worry-free lives. They do feel sad at times and they do go through difficult circumstances but the difference between a happy person and unhappy one is that the former chooses not to stay sad and instead works out to resolve the problem.

Taking care of yourself is an important element in attaining happiness. Staying healthy through proper diet and exercise will affect your mood positively. It is a known fact that people who regularly exercise are generally happy people because of the mood-lifting endorphins released during exercise. In addition, allow yourself to experience simple joys in life. Spend more time with your family. Go out this weekend with your friends. Give yourself a treat. Go to the movies or get a professional massage or even a fresh manicure

Therefore, the key to attaining happiness is to choose to be happy regardless of the situation. Of course there are times when a manner of seriousness is appropriate but the idea here is overcoming sadness and choosing to live life with a positive outlook. Looking at the good things, counting your blessings and focusing on your goals every day will help you become happy and stay happy.
