What Makes A Leader, A Leader?

Leadership is a process to self-discovery. Or it may be taken as an expression of an individual at her or his best, aiming for a particular something to be better, while at the same time, developing other’s potentials. However, it is not a reclusive pursuit but rather, something that harnesses the capabilities and energy of everyone around.

Now, what is a leader? And what makes a leader, a leader? Is it all because of his or her adeptness to navigate into the rough waters of inconsistent changes? Does a good leader see every opportunity hidden behind each setback? Or is there such a thing as someone born as a leader?

All throughout the history of humanity, the fall and success of nations depends upon the leader. At present, it may be hard for you to figure out a truly dedicated leader who does his or her job selflessly in the service of his or her people. Sad to note, but it is already a prevalent fact that most leaders of today are after the power, the money and the stature of the position. You may or may not agree with this, but reality is speaking for itself. Look at those countries that are below the economy line. There are nations out there with more percentage rate of the unemployed than the employed, more uneducated people, as well as hungry and homeless. Truthfully, no one can entirely blame a leader for such unfortunate and impoverished conditions. But given the power to uphold an institution, a nation or a country, leaders do bear the greatest responsibility of changing their people’s conditions to a much better one.

So again, what makes a leader, a leader? Anyone can be a leader. Leaders are not necessarily those you elected for local or national positions in your country’s government. You yourself can be a leader. Everyone can, even without a whole country to lead. You can be a leader in your own small or big way. Generally, a true leader is a doer, and definitely not just pure talks.

Strength of character is the best asset of a good leader. If you aspire to be an efficient and respected leader, establish and nurture your character, as it will protect your reputation. Your character will speak so much of the kind of person that you are. A leader must and should understand that his or her members or subordinates have innate needs to be appreciated and be treated as humans, as well as to be valued most and to be cared. For it is how a leader treats the little men or those below him or her that displays his or her greatness.

A real and capable leader has no time to criticize or to mock. He or she does not insult the people for their failures and mistakes. Instead, good leaders busy themselves in helping and supporting the lowly and improving others. In addition, a good leader knows how to control his or her temper. He or she can manage his moods and temperaments, essentially holding his or her tongue especially in times of infuriating situations. Bear this in mind that people will most likely lost their respect and honor for you if you are a hot-tempered individual.

Even with all the positive traits of a leader, but without the cooperation of the whole team, success is hard to come by. Therefore, teamwork is of utmost essence in leadership. It is considered to be a big step for a leader when he or she comes to realize that the people around him or her are so willing and eager to support him or her every step of the way. After all, no great leader can do all the works alone. And sometimes, other people do better jobs than a leader does on his or her own. Besides, a leader is not called as such without the followers or his or her team.

Moreover, a leader is a leader if he or she has a vision for the whole group or for his or her people. And that, he or she musts not be afraid to take risks, for with bigger responsibilities come bigger risks as well. To be able to bring others to follow him or her, a great leader must be motivated and be inspiring to everyone around him or her. He or she must inspire others to be better persons and be greater than who they are at the moment.

Real great leaders are above all, selfless. They are never selfish, as they devote their life and time to escalating other people to greater heights and a better quality of life. Ideal leaders are in continuous pursuit of improving their character, talent, attitude, skills and their relationship with people. They do not waste their time to be idle. They share their dexterity as well as encourage others to live up to their potentials. And all these make a leader, a leader.
