Sometimes, one cannot help but feel inadequate. And if he or she gets too close to be successful, somehow he or she cannot feel the elation that goes with being on top. Instead, the person will feel he or she is not worthy of success due to the lack of self-esteem. Although a person may show some hint of bravado, it does necessarily mean he or she is confident. The lack of self-confidence or self-esteem is one hindrance to success, yet it can be easily concealed, but in most times, end up in fear of success.
How does a person overcome this fear of success and enjoy it instead? There are steps you can try, in which you can do alone or with a therapist or a life coach. By following the befitting approaches to overcoming fear of success, you will be guided on how to face your own fears. In the end, you will attain a high level of success than you deem possible.
To overcome your fear of success, the best thing to do first is to identify the fear. You come up with your own belief on what success means for you. You can write them down and spend several minutes on them every single day for one week for you to really comprehend what success is for you. You may start with something like, “success means… or experiencing total success is…” As soon as you have written such things down, you discern where these beliefs came from. For sure, you did not just make them all up or picked them up from somewhere. And so, search deep within you. Look into the deepest realm of your mind and soul on how your beliefs came to being.
Rationally challenge your beliefs on success through the eyes or the perspective of an adult and note again where it came from. With the many beliefs that you keep, decide which one is best to keep, which can be remodeled, and which one may be thrown into the dumpster. For the beliefs you chose to toss out, ensure to formulate a healthful belief to take its place so you will not be tempted to regain it.
It is necessary that you recall the past successes that you backed away some time in the past. Determine the reasons why. Was it due to your being uncomfortable with that particular success level, or because it was supposed to be a covert rebellion on someone’s view of success? Increasing your self-esteem is definitely a huge step to aggrandize your levels of happiness and success. To be guided accordingly, you may take comfort from a popular book by Dr. Nathaniel Branden entitled, “The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem.”
Furthermore, to help you overcome your fear of success, distinguish which area in your life wherein you are most comfortable in and less threatened. From there, you aspire to be successful. By this manner, you will learn and be accustomed to live a peaceful connection with success, before incorporating the other areas in your life. Additionally, creating your own support group is beneficial. Your support group may not include your family if you do not feel like including them. A support group is composed of the people who bring you up, encourage you and bring out the best in yourself.
And then finally, you must be able to determine what your ideal success level is. After which, aspire to reach that level, maintaining it as it is and let go of everything else. Do not forget though that anything in life can change. Therefore, you must have room for better changes and greater level of success. Overcoming fear of success is a step-by-step process. It certainly requires a lot of your precious time. Nevertheless, at the end it will be rewarding and befitting for you.
